Fourth grade

Kids Thoughts on Shark Infested Waters..

Shark infested waters
This challenge with Mrs. Low was fun and frustrating. We learned that things are not as easy as they look.  I also learned that everyone needs to help or you’ll never get anything done.  It wasn’t very fair in the beginning.  We didn’t take a kid’s idea and then we took his idea and it was really good and it helped us completed the task.

Dear Mrs. Low,
The end of the year challenge with you was fun and exciting but it got frustrating sometimes. In the beginning we made a plan. We decided we would lay the wood one crates and two kids would collect the crates and wood and then pass them down.
Sometimes kids would scream at me if I did something wrong it was pretty frustrating. Other times it was fun like when Mason almost fell off and I saved him. It was pretty funny when Andrew got stung by a bee and almost fell off but Will and I grabbed him.
I learned that I like to sometimes lead and sometimes follow

Ms. Low’s ultimate challenge
This challenge was fun for our class. Some people took control because other people wouldn’t take control. People made awesome suggestions that we can do. Like me and friend made an awesome suggestion that led us to win. Most people were followers. I learned that if people work together anything is possible. I loved this challenge.
p.s. Thank you Ms. Low

Shark Infested Waters
Dear Mrs.Low
I very much enjoyed the end of the year challenge of Shark infested Waters.  I think it builds on your ability to work together as a group and is very important for all fourth graders to do this. Sometimes our class argued and that was annoying but overall it was so fun I want to repeat forth grade.

Dear Mrs.Low,
I enjoyed doing the end of the year challenge.  I learned a lot of things. I learned that if you listen you will succeed. It was challenging but we got through it. Our class put a lot of effort to get through the challenge. Our whole class listens to everyone’s ideas. The hardest part was what plan we did and how would it work out.  We had to think ahead but then we mashed everyone’s ideas together and we did it.  Thank you Mrs. Low!

FOURTH GRADERS PROBLEM SOLVE

Have you ever tried to cross shark-infested waters? What materials would you use to accomplish such a task? That is the problem that fourth grade students in Rye are asked to solve in their end of the year project with the Rye Youth Council's Elementary School Youth Advocate Stephanie Low.

The project is about teamwork and understanding what it takes for a group to work together to accomplish a task. Students have opportunities to practice problem solving strategies, communication skills, and the art of compromise.

The activity allows students first hand experience with being supportive of each other, thinking about "the whole", and seeing the many forms of leadership within a single group.

They see the value of persistence and creativity in the variety of ways they attempt to solve the problem. And whether it takes them 45 minutes or 2 hours and 45 minutes, they learn about the value of working with others to overcome obstacles and the satisfaction of taking on a challenge and solving it together.
